Getting ready for an international trip can be quite stressful. Having a packing checklist will help ensure you have everything you need to have a worry-free trip. These are 20 items that are a must for me.
1. European Plug Travel Adapter
This adapter is the first thing I pack for a Europe trip. I ordered mine from Amazon. It has two American outlets, one USB C port, and three USB ports. There are many alternate brands on Amazon, but this one has worked so well for me that I bought an extra one. I like to keep one in my purse in case I need to charge my phone at a restaurant or cafe.
2. Hoodie / Jumper
More often than not, they crank up the AC on the plane so it tends to get pretty cold. Bringing a hoodie or sweater along with you on your flight will keep you warm and comfortable.
3. Hand sanitizer
You can find hand sanitizers everywhere these days, but at the airport, this will cost a lot more. Target typically has a good travel size section. I like to pick up a few travel size items including a mini hand sanitizer prior to my trip. If you run out while in Europe, you can easily find them at the grocery stores or pharmacies.
4. Pocket Tissues
From my experience, it is not uncommon to find restrooms without toilet paper. So bring a few packs of tissues to start. You can conveniently order them on Amazon here. When you need to get more, you can easily find them at any grocery store there. They are super cheap in France and Italy and come in a pack of 12.
5. Wet wipes
In addition to bringing pocket tissues, I recommend bringing a pack of wet wipes. These come in handy when you’re eating on the go or when you don’t have access to a restroom to wash your hands. My go-to are baby wipes.
6. Sunglasses
I have managed not to lose my one and only pair of sunglasses, a black Ray-Ban Wayfarer that I bought many years ago. They are one of my necessities to cover my tired-looking eyes from being jet lag.
7. Stain Remover
These Shout wipes are a life-saver. I like wearing white, especially in the summer, but accidents do happen so I always keep a pack or two in my purse. They are available on Amazon and Target.
8. Ear plugs
Whether you’re staying at a hotel or a rental, you’ll never know what to expect during your stay. The apartment I got in Florence was almost perfect except I could hear footsteps from upstairs’ neighbors. For those who are light sleepers, ear plugs are a must. I normally get them on Amazon or Target.
9. Travel Pillow
Having a neck pillow on a long flight certainly make the journey more comfortable. I have forgotten to bring my travel neck pillow. Because of that I had to purchase a new one at the airport. Of course, it was a lot pricier there and now I have two neck pillows in my closet collecting dust when I’m not traveling. This item is now on my packing list so hopefully I won’t forget it next time.
10. Sandals
Because I am not a fan of walking barefoot around the house, I always bring a pair of flip flops, which I wear even in the shower. The Old Navy ones are comfortable and cheap. When on clearance, you can get a pair for $2 or $3. What a steal!
11. Hat (summer)
Summer in Europe is brutal to be honest. Remember to bring a hat, preferably one that is packable.
12. Umbrella
If you have a light umbrella, I’d suggest packing one if you are going to Europe. If you forget, don’t worry. You can usually buy one at the grocery store like Carrefour. I bought one for five euros, which was cheaper than those sold at MonoPrix.
13. Comfortable Shoes
The cobblestone streets and stairs are tough on your feet. I like to bring a pair of Nike AirMax 90 with me. Comfort is subjective. So, bring the most comfortable shoes you own.
14. SD Card
If you are bringing a camera with you, remember to throw in an extra SD card. The last thing you want to do while traveling is looking for an electronic store.
15. Water Bottle
In Italy, water fountains are ubiquitous. Having a water bottle with you comes in handy.
16. Coins
If you have euro coins from your past trips, bring them with you. You may need them for public restrooms, outdoor markets, and snacks like crepes, focaccia, coffee, ice cream, etc. I love a coin purse like this one to keep all my coins.
17. Ziplock bags
These are great to have to keep your toiletries and make up stuff. The last thing you want is liquid all over your clothes.
18. Credit Card
I have had my Chase Sapphire card for over ten years now, and I love it for international travels because they don’t charge fees for international transactions. You can collect points and redeem them as cash. Plus, they offer great customer service.
19. Laundry Bag
Alright, I know there are fancy laundry bags out there, but for me, a clean trash bag or plastic bag does the job.
20. Detergent Pod
I have stayed at AirBnB’s with a washing machine but there is no guarantee they will have laundry detergent. Yes, you can buy laundry detergent at the market but chances are you will leave it behind at the property. I think it’s a great idea to bring a few pods with you; they will come in handy especially when you’re traveling with a carry-on only.
Additionally, some people like to Air Tag their luggage or valuable items. Since I don’t personally own one, I didn’t include it above, but it’s certainly something that I’d consider getting for international trips.
